New FTTP install speedtest

[link to this post]

Just had FTTP installed. I paid for the 80/20 service from my IP as i dont need faster

Ran a few speed tests wired and wireless and get the same results. Are these acceptable? Download seems a tad slow for an 80mbps service(i know you never truly get that due to overheads etc)

Just to caveat the speeds, i am using an old Netgear D6400 (wifi5) not sure if that makes a difference?

Are you testing over WiFi or Ethernet? Always worth trying Ethernet if you can.

WiFi 5 (ac) should have plenty of capacity to reach 79 Mbps, which I thought you should get with FTTP. This looks about 8 Mbps slower than I expected.

Tried on Ethernet too get the same speeds.

The router is about 10 years old though so not sure if thats effecting it. Also i notice that i get random ping spikes (again on Ethernet).

For example i used cmd to ping the bbc website.

Most pings were 8ms, but every 30 seconds or so i would get a ping in thee 40-60ms

I'm on TT 150/30, just done a TBB speed test and it comes up 151/31 on wifi, although the x1 is down a bit from normal, this is fairly typical for my speed tests.

I do wonder if the old router is the cause then. I know 80Mbps isnt super fast, but could an old router throttle the speed?

I'm using a Sagemcom Fast5364, which is WiFi5, it's over 6 years old, so not the most modern, and I would guess your D6400 should at least match it's performance.

D6400 is 11 years old so nearly twice the age of your router.

Im not too fussed, 70mbps is more than enough for my needs anyway

My WiFi 6 (ax) router is 6 years old.

It is possible that hardware could be a limitation if it was designed assuming the majority of users would get less than 80 Mbps. This is more a case if your ISP uses PPPoE login as some very old hardware can hit performance with PPPoE.

In most cases that would be over 100 Mbps, not the difference between your 71 Mbps speed test, and the 79 normal limit.

It does use a login

My ISP said they would email Monday to make sure everything is ok, i will mention it

Although doubt 8mbps short of expected speeds is enough for them to do anything

Some people test with a PC connected via an ethernet cable straight into the ONT and using a PPPoE connection, this would rule out the router.
