Re: FTTC and Poweline Adaptors

In reply to a post by RobertoS:
There were a lot of posts a year or so ago, when these things were talked about a lot, that even on (full 8Mbps) ADSL Max anything lower than 85Mbps connectors could be dodgy. Perhaps with more than one machine connected. 20Mbps certainly didn't cut it.

I saw that some of them (even advertised at 200mbps!) had 10mbps ethernet interfaces. I note some are now available with GbE interfaces on the 200mbps AV spec; perhaps these sustain a higher average.

From Bob Gardner

I use the 85M ones with BT Infinity in a house with new wiring and not on extension leads. I briefly referred to them in my post on BT Infinity when it was all new a shiny in July see here:

http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/otherbb/3874313-fib...

A bit a googling (and credit to Jason from Micromart) suggests that the old 11M ones peak at 4M (hence the comments for ADSL Max), the 85M at 25M and the 200M and about 50M, although performance may vary. (all not that dissimiliar from wireless b,g,n real world speeds which is probably not that surpising as they are whom they are designed to compete with)

Having done everything to avoid bottlenecks for years (with a sub 2M connection on ADSL2+) I thought I must replace these when I got FTTC on the same principle. In reality the difference from 2M to 25M is so big (ie no more video stutter issues, and v fast download) that I never bothered.

I have one PC directly connected to the router (so getting the full 40M ish), one via the Homeplug (25M ish) and a laptop on G (25m ish) (I haven't felt the need to upgrade to N either).

So I expect it will be an issue for you but my advice would be to make the upgrade desision after you have experienced the service (mine is running at 15M at the mo!)

Thanks for the reply. Lots of good information. My PC is on the same floor as the master socket, so when I do get FTTC installed, will discuss all the options with the eng.
