Looks like a Virgin Media cabinet and judging by the age of the civils, ie the tarmac replacement has been there a while.

Aye, the 1st is a BT copper cab, the second is likely a cable cab, definately not a BT FTTC cabinet

Decided to actually physically check it out and you are right, it doesn't look like any of the BT fibre cabinet photos I've seen. Makes me wonder whether there even is one nearby atm. Maybe one hasn't been installed yet...

In that case, would I be correct in assuming that the cabling running from my house to the local street cabinet is that of copper then? (Which would be better than aluminium?)

You could assume that but not guarantee it unless you open every joint box and joint inbetween and checked
