I live in LS10 4G* too... we max out at 1.5mb..
It's really frustrating that we only live a few miles from Leeds City Centre and we get such slow broadband!!

I live on the New Forest Village Estate where the're building over 1000 new homes. I contacted Virgins cable my street helpdesk before we moved and they said they'd see if the estate was on their list... However as expected they have no plans to expand.

It annoys me that BT seem to only want to roll out FTTC/FTTH in areas where there is direct competition with virgin! Come on BT help out the people who are stuck on copper lines that Virgin won't serve!!!!

No Virgin cable hear (50,000+ people in town and nobody even bid for the cable contract when OFcom advertised it).
BT are rolling out FTTC now. Cabinets are all in, look to be having the final bits done inside (small works - single bloke with a small van is going round the cabinets this week).
All gets enabled (hopefully) in September.
So BT aren't only interested in Virgin enabled areas. They're doing possibly 10 exchanges in the county at the moment (almost none of which have cable TV).

It looks like you're on the Hunslet exchange (which serves around 28,000 lines - so about 1/3rd bigger than our exchange).
I find it doubtful you'll be left out completely (given the size of the exchange), so it's just a waiting game.
Maybe a campaign to your local MP?

No Virgin competition here either - I'm in a village outside a town that is served by Virgin cable; the village is not but is on the same exchange. Despite this, and to my surprise, an FTTC cabinet has been provided in the village, which has increased my speeds from around 3Mb to nearly 40.

Good news!!! There is now a date for Hunslet getting FTTC enabled! Apparently one of my Neighbours has been quoted February Next year!, not long now!

This is still irrelevent if you are not fed from a cabinet. E.g. when BT say they are enabling the exchange for FTTC, that really means they will be upgrading cabinets in that area to support FTTC from the exchange, but if you are directly fed FTTC is not available as you are not connected to an FTTC cab frown

Hi homer79,

In reply to a post by homer79:
Just this minute had FTTC installed. His tool said my line was 1090M long. I'm currently syncing around 34Mbs down and 10 up. I'm very happy indeed. I was only predicted 8Mbs. The speed tests aren't working for me at the moment.

I see from your later post that your download speeds dropped to 28 Mb after a few days.
What sort of speeds are you now achieving after a few months of use, have you experienced connection speed/stability issues, & have you unlocked the modem in order to obtain detailed connection stats?

The reason I am asking is because I am supposedly a very similar distance from the cabinet as you are.

On installation, the engineer told that my sync speed was 35 Mb.
He didn't mention the line's length though, & regrettably, I didn't ask!
This was confirmed by me achieving steady 32 Mb - 33 Mb actual download speeds for the first month.

"Something" was done by BT a month in, which left me with no phone or broadband at all for 4 days.

Since they were reconnected, I have endured many disconnections, really low speeds (7 Mb on occasions), many engineer visits, even though my ISP & BT stated my connection, (when remotely tested) was O.K. (LTOK) & that I might have to pay BT's extortionate charges if no faults could be found etc. etc. etc..

Each time an engineer visited, THE "fault" was supposedly found & fixed, but each engineer REFUSED to retest the line for any further faults.

The latest engineer (in mid-November) replaced some overhead external cabling, & stability appeared to have been regained, although speeds were still low.
He told me that before he replaced the cabling, my line length was being reported as 1000m, & after he replaced it, it was being reported as 900m (to the pole across the road from my house).
He wouldn't tell me what length was being reported at my master socket.

Download speeds crept up to 27 Mb for a few days, but many, many FEC, CRC, HEC type connection errors were seen.

Eventually, the connection gave up & re-synced at a lower speed again, added interleaving, & resulted in downloads now in the the low 20's Mb.

The connection errors have reduced, but I am still some 10 Mb to 12 Mb short of my initial speeds.

When others have been switched over from our original 8c profile to the new 17a profile, they have ALL seen a download speed improvement, with some seeing a slight reduction in upload speeds.

I can't say that I saw any real improvement at all.
If anything, I would say my error counts have increased.
I didn't really log them prior to the switch, as they didn't look too bad, but I now monitor them regularly.

How did the profile switch affect your connection's speeds / stability?

FYI, these are my current basic connection stats. You will see that my connection's attenuation is that high, that I don't get anything at all from the higher 17a frequency U2 & D3 bands.

Graphs for the above stats

Your stats/details MAY give me something to work with as a comparison to urge my ISP / BT into some action to get this resolved once & for all (unless you too have suffered such a large & ongoing speed / stability reduction).

BTW, my pre-install estimated speed was 14.6 Mb (so POSSIBLY a little closer to the cabinet than you are in reality), & since the switch to 17a it has become 24 Mb for my phone No.

Finally, for curiosity, who is your ISP? Mine is Plusnet.

Paul.

EDIT:-

I have sent your brother my contact details in a PM if you fancied sending me any PuTTy or Plink logs for your own connection to graph / examine / compare stats against mine etc.

Hi,

Since the switch to 17a my upload speed has done pretty much the same thing with the upload speed.
so on longer lines, it seems that its not such a good thing.
I can't tell you the exact stats as my brother has my spare modded modem at the moment.
The odd thing is that i've put an older modem on the line and it seems to be giving alot better speeds.
But it runs alot hotter than the other one.
I'm intending to put a bigger heatsink on my modem with some thermal epoxy and see if that helps things.
When I get the modem back i'll report back the current line stats.

Thanks homer79,

Any info is useful, especially yours as you seem to have a similar connection to mine i.e. NOT close to the cabinet.

The opposite worked for me though.
I was using an old SP10 spare modem (not version 2B) for gathering my stats, keeping my 2B in its virgin as delivered state.

My connection was doing reasonably well for a while, but then re-synced at a lower speed following loads of errors.
(The modem never got any more than what I would describe as slightly warm though).

I flashed the 2B & connected it up.
Speeds went up a little.
It may just have been the act of forcing a re-sync that gave us both the increased speeds.
DLM seems to lower speeds immediately there is a problem, but takes days & days to increase them again once the connection is stable again (if at all).
I have found that an occasional re-sync/reboot has been needed to force speed improvements.

Is your older, currently being used modem SP06, or SP10?
I believe it was the SP06 version that ran especially hot.

FYI, this is today's speed test:-

Speedtest

What sort of speeds are you currently "enjoying"?

Paul.

Re: Long line FTTC question

[re: deleted] [link to this post]

Well I was told I would only get 8mb as I'm 1000m from the cab, when it was first installed I synced at 26mb then it slowed to around 21mb for a few months, I got switched to 17a about four weeks ago and now I'm syncing at 35mb so a massive improvement for me.
During the day my max attainable rate goes upto 44 meg but around 6ish that drops to about 37, and then I start to get loads of errors but the line holds.
