Question about fibre cabling

The school I work at are having underground fibre cables installed. Now our exchange isn't even FTTC enabled yet (Sudbury, Suffolk). Now am I missing something but what is the point of this? Or is it for something else?

A school will often have its own network installed, and this can be delivered via Fibre, in fact many schools and businesses already use fibre.

FTTC is about rolling out fibre to cabinets in a low cost way that consumers can afford. A school will buy a dedicated connection, with appropriate content filtering, security and uptime guarantees.

Probably for a 'Leased Line' type connection which is not reliant upon FTTC/P at all.

Most likely a point to point Ethernet leased line. The fibre is independant of any other network including FTTC/P broadband, and probably connects to local hub site, which could be in an exchange, school, or other local authority site

Janet generally covers Further and Higher Education rather than the average school.

JANET is fibre based anyway

They might be, but typically they'll be on their own county managed link.

Most colleges and universities use JA.NET though
