Ok, I have information.

You (and 3 other postcodes close by) are connected to cabinet 49. However, this cabinet is indeed a TPON cabinet - this one to be precise? : http://g.co/maps/8hmpj

This is indicated to use by the fact that the data we have from BT states you are on {SMBF}{p49T} - the T being TPON.

So I'm not really sure how they will be providing FTTC to that cabinet if it serves only TPON stuff, as TPON is partly Fibre over copper overlay in its nature. Interesting one though!

You are definitely on the Bedford exchange, there is no "Bedford East" in the records. My records also show that BT are not planning to upgrade this (ot other TPON cabs on that exchange) and the uplift is 0%, meaning no improvement in service. There is also no phase number against your cabinet.

Not looking good, I hope what BT are saying is true!

That is the cabinet that I was talking about. I too did manage to get a copy of the BT postcode map spreadsheet, however did not know about the T meaning TPON (not that I knew what TPON was). Also on my spreadsheet 13th April 2011 it shows an uplift of 45.63, I'm sure you have newer version.

Oh well lets hope the advisor wasn't misreading the data, she did get the street name correct, so she must have got the postcode right. If I understand you correct they would have to put in a new cabinet and lay new fibre to support infinity?

Whats worse is that it's a pretty affluent estate and there would be close to 100% sign up for the service (At least in the half that doesn't have Virgin).

Thanks again for getting the info and explaining it. If by some miracle I get Infinity Adsl24 will be top of my list of providers to choose from.

Several places were only half-finished when ntl abandoned their network build.

Ironically one of the FTTC cabinets near me was delayed after they hit unused CATV ducting at the first location they dug. The CATV ducting, complete with street cabinets, was installed by ntl in the 90's but never went into service.

I don't understand that, you'd think that Virgin are smart enough know about this and cable up the areas they originally missed, if they'd have done that they would/could have had a large percentage take up in my area. More than enough to cover there cost of cabling the area.

You may be lucky in the longer term. If your estate was served by TPON you already have fibre from the exchange all the way to the grey cabinet.

If the developer ran the correct duct to the house you are therefore prime territory for FTTP as they can just blow the fibre to the houses without any additional work.

Each grey cab had a splitter for 24-32 premises, FTTP also uses a splitter for 32 premises. As they are unpowered they should fit in the boxes easily. It could be really easy to rollout FTTP to you and other ex-TPON sites.

I believe that some of the trial in Milton Keynes was also served by TPON historically.

Unfortunately the abandoned cable work round here is more than half a mile from the nearest cabled street and therefore unlikely ever to be used. ntl started digging half way down the road but ran out of money before they reached either end of it.

It's interesting to hear this. Believe it or not, but the information that James from ADSL24 managed to get me was that, I'll be getting exactly this (well FTTP), the only drawback is that it's going to be Q3 2012!!! Which is slightly different to what the BT advisor told me, I'd be more inclined to believe James as his info came from Openreach.

I just have to say a BIG Thank You to James for really going out of his way to get more information for me, he had no reason to do it, apart from being a nice guy.

Finally some info for the box round the corner from my house. Shander I feel your pain as i used to live in the other half of the estate and had the virgin 50Mb service. I have even tried to contact Virgin to back fill the rest of the estate, but no luck there as it is apparently too expensive. Its painful being stuck on a sub 2mb connection compared to that. I have considered starting a campaign to get BT or Virgin to uplift our area, but don't know how well it would be received.

Am I being stupid here but if you already have ADSL then there must be a copper overlay (unless in recent times they have found another way of delivering ADSL to TPON premises).

If there is a copper overlay then presumably there will be a "normal" (copper type) CAB and they could install FTTC to that.

Am I missing something?
