Well I was told I would only get 8mb as I'm 1000m from the cab, when it was first installed I synced at 26mb then it slowed to around 21mb for a few months, I got switched to 17a about four weeks ago and now I'm syncing at 35mb so a massive improvement for me.
During the day my max attainable rate goes upto 44 meg but around 6ish that drops to about 37, and then I start to get loads of errors but the line holds.

Was that your comment homer79, or someone else?

HI Cottee55,

Do you have any stats or graphs from before & after the profile switch?

I'm trying to prove to my ISP that there MUST be a problem on my connection that wasn't present when FTTC was first installed, & any evidence from other users with similar D-side line lengths may assist me in proving it.

If you have some stats, but no graphs, I could graph them for you if you wanted to send me your contact details via a PM.

Paul.

Thanks Cottee55,

What it does show me is:-

For both of us, our attenuation levels haven't changed that much following the switch to the 17a profile.

Your attenuation levels were/are are lower than mine for both 8c (after I started logging mine) & 17a from the outset.

Your 8c initial speeds were lower than my initial 8c speeds, but ended up being better than mine, after mine had had deteriorated badly.

Neither of us get anything from the higher frequencies (D3) that were introduced with 17a, yet you are now able to sync at 35719 K with an attainablke rate of 42480 K (& above) & I can only sync at 27131 K, with an attainable rate of currently 32012 K.

Mine recently peaked at a sync speed of 29527 K, attainable rate of 34988 K but that was the best it has been since I started logging things in July (after my problems started) & DLM only tolerated it for a few days before dropping my speed to what it is now, following loads of errors.

I have no real evidence that my Sync speed was ever around 35 Mb, with actual downloads at 32 Mb - 33 Mb (other than a couple of speed tests), or that my attenuation levels MUST have been lower than yours at one time to have ever achieved those speeds on the 8c profile.

What it does seem to prove is that for supposed similar D-side lengths, your connection is currently performing much better than mine.

It also seems to prove that for me to have EVER achieved higher speeds on the 8c profile than you, I must either live quite a bit closer to my cabinet than you do to yours, OR that "something" has increased attenuation levels on my connection, & thus reducing my sync/download speeds.

I may end up getting nowhere with this, but thanks for providing me with something to work with.

This thread may even be of some use to other users who are either experiencing problems, or are just curious as to how they should reasonably expect FTTC connections to perform over longer distances.

If I get enough details from different users, I will produce a "typical" speed vs distance chart/graph as that is one thing that I have not found, despite many hours of searching.

The only charts I have managed to track down have all been for connections starting at 60 Mb, 80 Mb, or 100 Mb, so not reallly relevant for BT's "up to" 40 Mb service.

If you ever got round to obtainining the relevant details in a single PuTTy log, I could graph your connection so that you could "see" what it looks like, but I imagine you are quite happy with your connection speeds at this time anyway.

The relevant commands are:-

xdslcmd info --pbParams
xdslcmd info --linediag
xdslcmd info --Bits
xdslcmd info --show
xdslcmd info --stats

Is that a fairly typical speed?

Although I solidly managed over 30 Mb for the first month on the 8c profile, Plusnet classed it as a "fluctuation" as my connection demonstrates that it cannot sustain anything higher than around 25 Mb sync speed.

I consider that it demonstrated that it could sustain the higher speeds, until BT did something that caused me to lose all services for a few days & then supposedly repaired it.

Hi,

I am approx 1.3 miles from cabinet (2100m) and this is my result;

It ranges between about 30-33 Wifi and about 35 when using the cable. BT speed test says the Max is 38717. It doesen't seem to go above 35 anymore. On the old 8c profile we used to get a solid 28-29meg from the install date, it didn't change even in the first 10days!

Good news!!! There is now a date for Hunslet getting FTTC enabled! Apparently one of my Neighbours has been quoted February Next year!, not long now!

Seems your neighbour was given some duff gen frown. Mid March, no activation date set yet, still shows as a future exchange for 2012 (sometime).
