It may be the Fritzl modem is not coping well with 17a, depends on what profiles they've tested the firmware. The PSD masks used in the UK can also mean modems do odd things, that have not been fully tested.

Thanks Andrew, I think you might be on to it. Although the Fritz! is designed for 17a, and is UK customised, it's not very configurable. I'm wondering therefore as it doesn't have a setting to accept external pings, whether its (inaccessible) firewall might interpret constant pinging as an attack and doesn't always respond which would upset TBBQM. And something similar might happen with speedtests, as I don't appear to have a problem on the BT tester. Will test with a re-install of the OR modem when I get the chance, though I'd like to get a replacement so I can also unlock it and compare data.

Mine is the other way round, packet loss was clear before the 17a change, then appeared immediately after the resync. But as I achieved no overall speed increase, I can't figure out why? And why do testers show zero packet loss?

Wow - that's bad. I had the same kind of picture on the first 2 days on 8c, though the peaks were nearer 10% and the average under 5%.

DLM obviously intervened after 2 days, added interleaving (which fixed the packet loss entirely) and then (a few more hours later) dropped the speed from 40 to 36Mbps.

Without the hacked modem at the time, I can only guess that I was getting a high number of CRC errors in the first 2 days, which DLM could see and act upon, but that 4% of the pings (carried in ICMP) were dropped. I guess further that the switch to interleaving also turned on FEC, which lost the CRC errors and fixed the packet loss. I don't think I needed the drop in speed (the line worked perfectly with profile 38717 alongside interleaving for perhaps 10 hours), but I guess that went alongside DLM's choice of profile for the line.

I therefore wonder why DLM isn't doing the same to your line, and obviously wonder whether the Fritz is managing to do some to subvert DLM - perhaps by not reporting the CRC statistics back to the cabinet DSLAM.

I think you posted some error stats, so I'll go check those & respond...

Oops, sorry for causing problems to everybody: My Broadband Ping but something happened yesterday (not sure what as I was ill in bed at the time); and just managed to complete my first IPv4 test (which have refused to complete before) on TBB at 29.5 down, 5.6 up (a stalled test just beforehand was showing 33Mbps down according to TBBmeter though!). IPv6 test still shows 6Mpbs down though, with a better upload figure.

That's moving in the right direction, but still a long way off

I couldn't possibly publicly repeat the terms that Mrs. Eagle has used recently because

a) She would be embarrassed, they are not very lady-like terms

b) They would be immediately censored
