If I try Putty, I get an error saying "Server refused to allocate pty"

I can't remember PuTTy's default settings, but they do need to be:-

Host name or IP Address: 192.168.1.1 (or whatever it has been changed to)
Connection Type: Telnet
Port: 23

I have to "Either ssh to the server with the -T flag (disabled pseudo terminals) or via putty Click on the SSH tree (+) on the left side of the putty window then TTY and check "Don't allocate a pseudo terminal""

then that gives me the ATP> prompt, so I have to enter "shell"

then I can do "xdslcmd" etc..

Ok, I see if I just use telnet, I get the ATP prompt.

Anyone know how to get the modem to reboot via telnet?

If I've understood this thread, this means anyone with a bit of nous can let the engineer install, with no router, (assuming not BT broadband), then do the above and connect via ethernet into their ADSLx router and use that as the WAP. (With the appropriate settings in it of course).

Yes I think so. With the hacked firmware from asbokid, you actually get a full-featured VDSL modem/router - just no wifi. (It also works on ADSL).

Of course if you just have one PC to be wired, you dont even need to unlock the modem, just plug it direct in to the PC using LAN1 and set Windows/Mac/Linux to dial a PPPoE connection.

That's what I was meaning a new user could do to test the installation, while the engineer was there, then play afterwards.

It could save savvy people the cost of a router and the redundancy of their existing one.

That's correct by default, but the PC will likely have some basic firewall like most routers.
