It no doubt breaches the Ts & Cs of use of the FTTC service as the modem still belongs to BT Openreach.
OTOH, is it legal to intentionally hide the stats from users?

Unlocking the modem does not change anything at all.all the settings are the same as what it shipped with, with the added benefit of being able to view the router status page. What's wrong with that
The actual "training period" is by the Openreach DLM on the DSLAM in the cabinet, up to the end of the second day of connection.
BT Wholesale still maintain their silly 10-day period in order to set the MSR and FTR for the line. Neither of which matters two hoots so far as I can tell, except it saves having to alter the relevant bit of code in their DLM to cater for fibre.
