2 Basic Fibre queries

[link to this post]

Ordered a FTTC upgrade with Zen ( and purchased Zen 582n router).

1. Will need a "data extension cable" from line entry in bedroom (where very old master socket) is to study next door where router is. Is the "data extension cable" for master socket to modem rather than modem to router?
2. How will this data extension cable be terminated - single socket of some sort?
3. The BT Modem seems to run in bridge mode. Does this mean that it does not have its own IP address but just acts as "translator" between the LAN and WAN and passes all the data through? This means do not have to worry about conflicts with the router DHCP etc..

thanks

Paul

I can't answer number 1 and 2, but I can answer number 3.

The modem is purely a bridge between WAN and LAN. Your router plugs into the modem via ethernet cable and connects using PPPoE, the router obtains the IP address from the ISP (assuming you have a dynamic IP allocated, not a static IP) and the router will handle all LAN stuff such as NAT, DHCP, etc.

Hope that answers number 3.

Even with static IP the router picks it up as though it's dynamic. As it's a 582n from Zen it'll configure itself within a few minutes of being plugged in to the BT modem and power. (Plug it in, put the kettle on and make a brew, come back and the Internet connection should be working).

Data extension should be RJ-11 - which connects to the BT modem.

regards,
Phil.

1. Cable is for master socket to modem, i.e. carries the VDSL2 signal. Obviously the shorter the distance the VDSL2 has to travel the better.
2. Believe it is terminated in a socket, which the standard cable supplied with the Openreach VDSL2 modem will plug into.
3. Your LAN will only see the DHCP server on the Zen 582n router.
