Re: FTTC Cabinets being installed in Barnstaple

[re: R0NSKI] [link to this post]

So he creates an address, i.e. [email protected] and gives this to his friends.

They email [email protected] and in the background, it gets redirected to his ISP email, i.e. [email protected]

So, if he changes ISP in the future, his friends dont know any different, they keep emailing [email protected], but in the background, he changes it to redirect to [email protected] etc.

So far so good.

However, when he replies to any emails that have been redirected to his ISP address, the reply will come from the ISP address, i.e. [email protected].

Have I got that right? So someone would email him on [email protected], but get a reply from [email protected] ...... this would be confusing, and he could end up in the same position....people start just replying to the ISP address, bypassing the redirect.

How do you deal with that?

You set the reply address in your mail client to match [email protected] It's entirely transparent to his friends, and himself in fact. Once you get your head around it it's very simple.

I use the Gmail outgoing SMTP server when sending from my tablet, but it is as if it comes from my proper email address. Doing this allows me to send emails no matter what ISP I'm connected to the internet through.

Hope that makes sense.

That will work but you still won't have ISP independent email address. For what it costs I would still get your own domain name for the email address and switch to using that. You can still collect emails from your old address (and advise anybody who uses it to use your new address ), for as long as it's not deactivated. You'll need to check what you're previous ISP policy is.

Well both of my lines are live. 50 down 20 up ish. 1 guy was a Kelly communications contractor who rushed almost put a drill through my monitor and didn't even do any tests on his install. He literally just told me to do a speed test.

For email I have my own domain and have hosting anyway for my websites so have always used that.

Thanks for that. I've got my head around it, but never appreciated the reply-to bit, hence why I thought your outgoing mail would come from the isp address. This makes sense now!

Well....I'm glad your connected, but concerned about your experience. I hope I get someone who at least appears to care!

At the end of the day though, I guess all I need is "activating" at the cab, the face plate changing and the fibre modem delivering. As long as it works at this point, the engineers knowledge doesn't really matter, but from a customer service point of view, it would inspire confidence that the job has been done correctly if the guy seems to know his stuff.

How did he nearly put a drill through your monitor? And you say he did no tests....what exactly did he do? How long does it take?

He was literally rushing to get home back to Swansea. In racing twice he nearly scratched my monitor while dumping his drill on my desk. I asked if I could used my shielded rj11 and he plugged it in the lan sockets. it was just extremely careless and he didn't give a monkeys.

The Openreach guy tested the first line with a jdsu and some tone test. The Kelly Communications guy just said do a speedtest or something, saw it work and left almost running out the door.

I'd be putting a complaint in if I were you. Why was he coming from Swansea? Were both lines via BT?

My appointment is AM on Monday, so a bit early in the day/week for the engineer to be rushing to get home.
