Re: BT speed estimates

R0NSKI, WWWombat,

thanks for the postcode checker links -

have tried neighbours addresses and speed estimates are all fairly similar to mines (apart from business number mentioned in initial post), have done a bit of research into the street I live and apparently 10-15 years ago it was considered a bit of a "slum neighbourhood", whereas the business was a branch of TSB bank at the time, so it's possible that our phonelines were installed at different times from the business one and take a much different route, or are aluminium as Wombat suggested.

Also thanks for info about Plusnet's house moving policy, I currently get my adsl from them and am more than happy with service/value, will probably go ahead and order.

@MrGrumpy - to be honest, if it wasn't for speedchecker sites I don't think I'd notice the difference between 80mbps and 20mbps downloads - but I've found myself doing a lot of uploads recently,

1mbps is getting to be painful, 6mbps would be a big improvement, 15-20mbps would make me happy smile

That could certainly be an explanation - I could imagine (without a shred of proof) that a bank might get a higher grade of cable connected to the outside world, especially if it carries some alarm or monitoring signals. I'm thinking of uprated armouring, rather than uprated copper, and perhaps with a dedicated cable.

If you see any Openreach engineers in the vicinity, you could always stop for a chat...

If you do go ahead, let us know how you get on.

It would be interesting to hear how you get on. Did you try the business address rather than the phone number?
