Modem questions

VDSL fttc is finally available in my area, the cabinet has been installed just up the road.

I have an asus rt n66u router which I reallly like and do not want to replace with the isp supplied all in one.

I was wondering is it easy enough to configure one of the openreach modems if I purchase one of the many on ebay, is there any particular model should look for?

Also is an engineer visit needed to to upgrade existing adsl2+ ?

The best one from Ebay would be a Huawei HG612 v3B. The modem doesn't need any configuration, just plug and play.

Simply set up your router for a PPPoE connection and connect it to the modem supplied by the engineer. Engineer visits are still typical at the moment.

EDIT:

You didn't mention you were in the IoM, don't know what the procedure is there regarding VDSL installation.

Sky have some odd username and password requirements.

thought the r66 has a built in vdsl modem ?

The RT-N66U doesn't have a VDSL modem.

With Sky fibre the router has to support 1483MER with DHCP Option 61.

You will need to use Wireshark to fine the username and password from the hub. IIRC.

I am with isp surecw, I am hoping I can buy the modem advised connect it to my asus and simply change the asus from pppoa to pppoe with my log on details in the format
[email protected]
password

and it should work?
