thanks. I think I've got an old HH1 in the loft so could possibly try that approach - however none of the links to the required 6226 firmware for that old hub seem to work anymore - BT appear to have removed all traces of it so might not be able to get the HH1 into the correct state.
Thats said though the article did reveal how to retrieve the SIP config details for my BB Talk line. I do have an old Draytek DSL DSL router with VOIP phone ports on it so if I can persuade it to route SIP out of one of it's LAN ports instead of it's modem I might be able to get my wired phone BB talk line up again that way (I don't care about the DECT facilities in the home hub - just use the BB Talk line as a fixed 2nd line in my home office)
Also I can now tell my wife that there was a reason to keep all that "old electronic junk" instead of throwing it out
Can't help but think there must be a neater solution involving fewer boxes to get me BB Talk and not lose my BT sport multicast channels - with or without the Openreach modem still in the picture - probably a decent third party cable router that supports VOIP lines and routes multicast the way BT likes it plugged into the OR modem in router rather than bridge mode as per this thread...

Hey there I tried to use these settings but my modem says PPPoE status Obtaining the IP address failed. Can you please maybe point me in the right direction? I'm supposed to have a static IP from my ISP but I can't see where to actually put this in?

Why would you need to "put it in"? It is an external IP address assigned to you by your ISP. You should not need to tell your router or modem about it. It has nothing to do with internal IP addresses assigned manually or by DHCP.

In Basic ¦ WAN, select connection type of Static and you will be able to put in the IP Address, subnet, dns and gateway.

but then where do i enter my username and pasword that my isp gave me?

I'm with Manx Telecom and they require a username and password (that I have entered), do those settings above look good to go? It's just odd as I'm getting that IP error? I'm stumped - thanks for everyone help so far though.
