Re: Modem far from mstr skt (external wire), retain extensi

Had the installation done. Got an experienced Openreach guy. Apparently he only got sent because a line fault was showing.

Anyway, he arrived without any external grade Cat 5 but he agreed to put in a new master socket. He reconnected the internal extensions, which had been daisy-chained from the basement master socket up the back of the house, by connecting the new ground floor master to the old ground floor extension socket, which he used as a "pass through". That old socket was in an unsuitable location for the modem, because only a lighting circuit with round pin sockets was available there for power.

That was all quite easy, but then he had to clear the line fault, which took ages. It was eventually traced to faulty ADSL equipment in the exchange. Apparently lines are usually left to run through ADSL gear even when people are switched to fibre. This is supposed to be just a passive pass-through, with the equipment switched off, but apparently this was causing some sort of line fault. It seems it takes the engineers a while to get jobs booked at the exchange - and nobody answers the phone there, they get put on hold etc. Hilarious.

Anyway, I was very happy with the job!

Not entirely. Too many wires, too many boxes, that sort of thing!

I also orderd an Asus router from Amazon Germany (cheaper), but it comes with a diabolical wall-wart (transformer) stuck on to what appears to be a Europlug. However, I cannot persuade this to mate with my UK BS1363-5:2008 fused conversion plug, so one or other of these plugs is of non-standard construction. This is unsafe, but Asus will not help me, and advised I look on ebay for a used power cord! Instead, I am having to return the router and buy it again from the UK operation.
