What exactly makes a normal FTTC cab have FTTP on demand available as well? I take it must be certain areas?

Nothing particularly special, as the build with respect to fibre and aggregation nodes is the same for all cabinets, i.e. the basis of a national FTTP roll-out has reached almost 70,000 street cabinets.
The availability of fibre on demand was usually driven by having staff and planning resources in an area to actually deliver, and some areas had FoD as a requirement of the BDUK contract - so the rush is on to get FoD2 out there, but as you can see from the blog the change with could knock a lot of time off final install time.

Perhaps @WelshAWrrior is in Wales ... Wasn't there some agreement between Wales & BT that FoD would become orderable in Wales again, even while they hadn't sorted out the FoD2 trials...

For what it's worth, I just checked a relative's phone number in North Wales (Halkyn exchange) - their cabinet was very recently (last few weeks) enabled for FTTC, and it's now showing FTTP on Demand as being available (which wasn't showing a few weeks ago). It's not showing up on my number in Aberdeenshire.
It's somewhat academic anyway, as neither of us would likely be willing to pay the huge fees for FTTPoD even if it was possible to order it...

I am indeed in Wales and have just signed up to FTTPod trial via Plusnet after speaking to the CS team.
BUT I can now see that it isn't for Fibre on demand - just FTTP enabled areas so the CS rep wasn't really giving me the whole truth!! I'll wait and see what they come back with.

If they do take your order are you all set to pay £200+ a month alongside deep 4-figures for install on a 36 month contract?
As far as I'm aware Plusnet are not taking FoD orders and haven't since the initial trials. It's a business product, hence the 36 month contract, with those in the Superconnected Cities areas, hence the high install charge, in mind.
