Warning - do not cover up your Homehub, the ventilation slots are there for a reason.

I wouldn't know, I know that some have over heated due to either a faulty PSU or power regulator inside due to it was located in one location and not like in those two images from that link.

Two of my friends that got their HH3 at the same time a long while back so probably the same batch, both had the same heat issue due to PSU chucking out too high of a voltage than required resulting in the power regs in the HH trying to dissipate the extra heat generated and failing, one of those ended with a sizzle and a pop and a very small dent/hole in hh case.
The both moved away from the HH's and brought different brands.

I know ours had a heat problem a little while back where the home hub would keep locking up, so I did a complete factor reset and rebooted it and it has been fine since, so for some reason ours must of got into some strange loop, we have several + inches clear area around our HH4.

Maybe if I wasn't being paranoid and didn't do the factory reset ours may of got worse, granted probably not as bad as those images

Oh, so you're talking about the HH3 not the HH5.

Anyway, the image indicates the problem was caused by covering the HH5, not the device being faulty.

Oh, so you're talking about the HH3 not the HH5.

For the example of my friends HH's over heating yes, I gave those as an example due to the power side may not of changed much between each of the different HH's.
All it takes is for the power regs to over heat causing the caps in there to dry up and pop, causing ripple in the power lines, its a bit like a thermal runaway effect.

They are set to automatically reboot every 14 days as they are buggy.

Back in the day users would keep them on for months on end & without a reboot the homehub would lock up itself, requiring switching on and off at the outlet.

If it's rebooting more than once every 14 days (as yours is) it's probably faulty, get a replacement from BT.

So a fair description would be they are an inferior POS

I could't say about the rebooting, but can say that my neighbours Hub seems to report a lot more usage than actual...

They are good at what they do - works out of the box, fast wireless, supports BT TV, supports dynamic DNS, no problems with port-forwarding, basic line stats.

But you can't change DNS, locked to BT, no error stats.

I would say a good basic router but no good if you expect any more than basic.

In a previous address I was with NTL/Virgin media and used their model and a Linksys router which was great, plenty of info. Is their a suitable equivalent for the HH5?

I do wonder if it's reporting packets coming in that it blocks, rather than actually delivered packets.

There are plenty of alternatives available but the choice depends on your requirements, what are they?

For example, are you on a Huawei cabinet?
You you want to broadcast BT Wifi?
Do you use BT TV?

Don't know what type of cabinet. It's cab2 in Chinnor. Alas the streetview images of where it is are a bit old and don't show it.

I don't use BT TV, I don't need to broadcast BT wifi although I do use it when travelling though.
