What worried me is the statement in the OP:-

That suggests a long way from the cabinet, though the line may be going all over the place and it is physically much nearer. I expect it is also throughput speed rather than connection, so things may be a little better than that.

Assuming the worst, I would expect the aggregation point to be a similar distance. The bog-standard installation fee for such a distance would be several thousand. Up to 199m is £1100, 200-399m £1800, 400-599m £2500, 600-799m £3200, 800-999m £3900, 1000-1499m £5125 and 1500-1999m £6875. Above that POA. All plus Vat.

Then there needs to be a survey I expect, which could result in refusal or maybe even higher costs.

Zen do FTTP and it's all 12 month contracts. They do up to 80/220/330 and the max you would pay for 330 is £116 with or £112 without line rental

FTTPoD costs them £140+VAT per month.

The end point is in a village and most of the wire is carried on telegraph poles back to the cabinet. This should be simpler than pulling through ducts, yes?

It is for a business and the hope is the grant scheme from the Welsh Assembly should cover most of the install costs. We're not the only business based in the village so we might be able to come up with some kind of shared cost anyway.

One alternative is to relocate the business, hardly an inexpensive move.

I've contacted BT Business and although we didn't get as far as estimated install costs they did say they could do it but the monthly charge would be £150. That was just a little too rich for my business. I could have justified half of that but I can see for larger businesses this is actually reasonable for what you get.
