Likely to be supplied from a Power pillar or even from an existing fttc cabinet over new copper cable

Thanks Ribble, Yes I see that a new cable would be great and could solve that problem.

I neglected to state, sorry, that the cables in our area which are not getting anything like Superfast speeds and nowhere near 10Mb are supplied by cables which are buried directly into the ground for most of their distance.

The lack of ducting and poles makes installing G.Fast problematic too, BTO have to decide to create 2km of new ducting in the ground, or get wayleaves to erect new poles (which some NIMBY may take offence to). All that work to serve one group of 8 properties and another group of +16 properties does not sound very economical. Providing power might be the least of the issues.

It might well have been common practice in rural areas for cables to be dropped straight into the ground without ducting. So this scenario might be more common than expected, BTO know the truth of the matter.

A fixed wireless connection to the G.Fast node from the cabinet or the exchange may work better in this scenario, no new cables or poles to install.

Round my way, a lot of the BT cables are not even buried, they are merely thrown onto the grass along the side of the road.

Really? Some photos are in order. I've never, ever seen live phone cables just draped across a roadside verge.

About 25 years ago, I chew up quite a few metre of BT phone cable laid in the grass, when I had the job of cutting grass verges with tractor & long reach mower.

As requested.

I did offer to run the fibre up our road "to the accepted standard" but that offer was declined smile

Sounds familiar ... the neighbours told me that before I moved here the phone cable was regularly cut off when the grass was cut along the verges in summer. The only reason it hasn't been cut recently is that the council no longer have the money to cut the grass verges so don't do it.
