When you say "spurred off" - did the OR Tech say anything more? Can you find out any more?

This could be a classic case of a "Bridge Tap" - they really do cause problems.

Not meant to, however there are almost certainly some in existence and if they are found it should not be too hard to get it removed.

(mainly for the OP) A lot of early telephone line installations were implemented by tapping off a line that passed the premises so it is easy to see how it may have occurred.
