VDSL Upstream Potential?

Am I correct to assume that Openreach could add further tones (activating bands U3 & U4) to VDSL lines that could further increase the ammount of upstream lines (within close proximity) could acheive?

Well my potential upstream from an engineers tool was around 35mbps

Openreach just need to sell an uncapped upload speed product.

For adding bands it would just depend on if the equipment would support it and if ofcom would allow it..

mine was 31 but dropped to 24 due to crosstalk...

Sounds like you could benefite from extra bands being enabled... potentially could get as high as 50+...

I know its not a huge biggy currently but the competition (non FTTP) are catching up where upstream bandwith is concerned.... and thats pretty much all that Openreach's network has over the alternative superfast ISP.

So the options are to go to 30MHz / profile 30a or to use band plan 997 instead of the current 998 which would come at the expense of downstream bandwidth.

Going to 30MHz would need new line cards in the DSLAMs and new CPE as much of what's out there, including the Huawei and ECI kit Openreach provided, doesn't support profile 30a. Going to band plan 997 needs every line to go to plan 997 which will lower downstream speeds.

TL;DR neither is going to happen.

Competing with Virgin Media on speeds has never been a big deal for Openreach and isn't going to start now. They've accepted that, short of a massive FTTP splurge, they can't keep up.

VM are actually ahead on upstream bandwidth now, too, by the way. The Homeworks 300 package, alongside 320Mb downstream, delivers a clean >20Mb upstream after overheads, the Openreach 76Mb FTTC does not.

Yes... as soon as you mentioned it wasn't as simple as a reconfig and making room for bandwidth, I assumed as much...

Yes I was aware of this... I don't think it'll be long before Virgin allow 30Mbp to come throguh then, maybe Q1/2 2017
