The coffee shop may have its own wifi but does it have its own internet connection? If the coffee shop's wifi is connected through the main connection, someone with a coffee shop login could be using it out of cafe hours. Even without a coffee shop login, WPS is far from secure. It is possible to get in without the need to push a button.

However, I think that it could be someone in the office. Or several people. A few windows updates and a bit of watching youtube or even iPlayer would easily eat up that much data.

But that wouldn't account for the use when the office was closed.

Does your router not keep track of data use? Check it on a daily basis and compare with what BT says you used.

Are any home plugs used in the property?

Sometimes this allows neighbours to access your internet unintentionally.

Agree. If the coffee shop wifi is using the same internet connection and is on 24/7 then out of hours usage would be high on my list of possibilities.
Is the coffee shop in the middle of nowhere or near house ? Have you checked using your mobile how far the signal radiates ? One tip to reduce outside signal is to move the wifi router so it cannot see windows and doors.
When I walk through my town to get my morning paper my Smartphone is always connecting to coffee shops , bars etc I pass which I have used and whose wifi details have been automatically saved.
If you still cant reduce the usage move to an unlimited download account maybe with a different ISP.

Does the router itself not record throughput? If the one being used does not maybe someone will have one that does.

You don't have to use the iPlayer or similar very much to generate that sort of usage in a month.

It may be time to look for a lower cost supplier.

The usage is not really through the roof at 75Gb, my household we work jobs and are only home in the evenings and weekends, even then we are out a lot and we use over 1000Gb many months.

I would just get an unlimited Package as often they're not any more expensive.

It does look somewhat excessive for the intended service provided, particularly hitting 30+GB at a period when the premises are effectively closed.

It could be the monitoring by the OP of the usage is a bit adrift, but we aren't talking about a month's usage. At most two days in the latest instance.

From the earlier posts I assume the BT product has a 40GB monthly allowance.

Ah I haven't read the thread fully - on a mobile device!

Often BT will offer a retention offer where the unlimited price is similar to the 40Gb standard price.

Does anyone have VPN access into work? If so, it could be that the user has accidentally left themselves connected and possibly have been streaming/downloading films etc

It happen here all the time but we have 2 x 100Mbps leased lines so it doesn't matter for us wink

If original poster has been through the hoops to be pretty sure usage is not real, then most likely explanation is BT has its figures wrong, there was if I recall another spate of this back in June this year.

All that said switching to an unlimited service for the small difference in cost removes a lot of worry e.g. consider the time taken to chase down and try and figure out this 'over usage'. If you do upgrade be sure to chase for a deal.
