Could WELL be windows updates if a W10 PC is left running. The Windows 10 Anniversary edition is as buggy as hell and has had updates several times a week sometimes. With 4 desktop PCs here running you can imagine how that wrecks an ADSL2+ connection and another reason I want back to FTTC.

Is it possible to shut the hub down completely on a Friday afternoon and restart on the Monday morning? Ask BT for usage figures at both points in time and they should be identical. If they are then it points to an unknown user, if they are different then BT will need to explain.

Can you instigate a turn off at night regime too? Draw up an process for the last to leave to turn it off and first to arrive to turn it on ... and initial a list to confirm. Then start to review daily usage stats.

I think turn off schedules is definitely a good idea. However, while it definitely might be a bogus user and not BT consumption error, I think that a turn off schedule which results in NO BT consumtion will definitely NOT prove that there is NOT a BT consumption error. It all depends on the nature of the error. A BT consumption error could easily be related to miscalculating or presenting ACTUAL usage as related to usage that is simple not there.

Without checking in detail, some of the electronic ones appear to be very versatile.

Just a thought regarding BT routers (and I think it's only BT that does this) - BT allow guest logins from their routers using 'BT WiFi' and 'BT with FON' -could that be the issue?
I'm not with BT but a neighbour is, and their BT WiFi shows up as a valid wireless connection and I can (but don't) log in to that..
Could comeone be logging in to the guest account (I understand it's on by default, but I could be wrong) and would the usage be included in the stats?

BT WiFi or FON usage is NOT part of a user's allowance and never charged to that user.

The feature in the router means you do not have to wait for the router to reconnect. The connection is kept alive ( same IP, same session, same stats etc) but the router goes into a power save state that means you cannot access the internet.

I have used this to as an incentive to get the family to go to bed at night as internet access stops at midnight till 7.30am.

Mains timer would work BUT would reset all stats, IPs etc.

It does enable you to keep a running total of the data the router thinks has been sent over the connection ( between reconnections around 14 days usually but can be far longer). This enables you to cross check the BT recorded amounts.
