FTTP Install Costs (ECCs)

[link to this post]

I recently tried to order FTTP (not FTTP on demand) for a site in Wales.

The BTW checker says:

https://gyazo.com/c34058f00847c31afdebc2389814da7e

The order ended up getting surveyed at least twice and we've had a price back from KCOM:

Survey * 1 = 245.14
1*8ml Pole=394.89
260m Duct Soft=7485.40
2*JMF4=1602.72
Total Cost: £9728.15
Build Days = 72

Ouch.

What I didn't know is that OR only cover ECCs of up to £1000 for FTTP - is that correct?

KCOM also have a policy that they automatically cancel any orders which would have ECCs over £1k without even giving the EU the choice to pay the difference.

If really 260m from your drop point then going to be hard to get a provider to swallow the cost without paying it upfront or spread over a period.

The £1,000 figure sounds about right, don't recall it precisely. If the duct is across your own land then you could get price down by installing the duct to their specifications.

I thought KCOM only served the Hull area?

If youre in South Wales then Spectrum Internet might be able to do it cheaper. I think they use their own contractors for the civil works.

BT retail/business themselves may provide a more competitive install quote.

I had the same thought about kcom - I'm wondering if it is a leased line quote?

Thanks. I'll do so more digging (boom-tish) as from Streetview I can see BT poles running down the B road which provides access to the site. There is a long drive so that might cover the 260m of duct. I wonder how the existing PSTN for the ADSL is fed though and why a new duct is needed.

To answer the other question, the order with Eclipse Internet but they are KCOM branded now.

Maybe the cable is directly buried rather than in a duct, not that uncommon for final drop to a single property and when cable was installed years before the idea of broadband

Good point.

I'm trying to find out if the duct work quote was for the EUs private land and if so, are they interested enough to get a quote from a local company to do the work to compare the cost.

I presume their service is only available to existing Eclipse customers then as I've tried with a known FTTP capable address on the KCOMhome site and it says they don't provide service there.

Personally if I was you I would still speak to BT and see if they charge the same for install.
