Line attenuation:

Hi all,
Can anyone tell me why Line attenuation goes up on my FTTC connection?
3 Weeks ago my Line attenuation was 16.8 db.
It as gradually creeped up in 0.1db steps until when I checked today it is 17.1db.
as the Line attenuation goes up my speed goes down.

Thanks for any advice.

0.3dB change is really very small, it could be down to a number of things including the way the software measures it in the presence of some cross-talk.

Right at the limit there will be slight effect on connection speed but it will be small.

Has the router had a total power on/power off to ensure the creep is not a software induced effect

The copper wires are being slowly stretched as your house is gets closer to the cliff edge and about to slip over.

I know you were joking but if you'd had said the copper wires were being stretched as the weather gets warmer you could well be correct.

I've no idea how my attenuation alters, but I've always seemed to have better speeds and fast path throughout the colder months of the years.

Just on plain ADSLmax, I've noticed the difference with the weather. Generally better speeds when its cold, the noise levels on copper wire will be better when its cold, I also get an effect dependant on the water level in the junction box out by the main road which floods frequently.
