FTTP Only?

[link to this post]

Looking at moving into a property which is about 18 months old. It is in a Virgin Media cabled street but judging by the reports, its suffering from high utilisation so i'm looking at a BT based product.

The checker says FTTP is available and on the BT retail checker, it confirms this.

On the TalkTalk and Plusnet checkers it says only ADSL is available.

Why is it BT can offer 76mb fibre package but the others can't?

Because not all providers have chosen to sell the Openreach GEA-FTTP services as yet, and that is their choice.

https://www.thinkbroadband.com/packages/fttp-broadband is the ones we know sell GEA-FTTP services.

They choose not to. They deem the ~£1-2 per month they make over their input costs isn't worth their time investing in training their staff and changing their ordering systems to support FTTP yet, given that it's still a small % of the total market.

There are plenty of other ISPs who can provide such a service.
In the interest of equivalence, Openreach maintain a list:

My question is why is Infinity 2 available to order on the BT website which is standard FTTC isn't it?

Or is it FTTP with a 76/20 profile?

The products are branded the same regardless of the technology used to provide them.

When I looked yesterday the Infinity branding was gone completely.

It's now SuperFast Fibre Unlimited 2 (formerly Infinity 2).
Both FTTC and FTTP SuperFast Fibre Unlimited 2 packages are provisioned at 80/20.

Just pick a supplier from the limited list and enjoy your 76Mb, low latency, uncongested, consistent, full speed service. Remembering that WiFi will test below 76Mb. You cannot get the cheapest suppliers but it should be the best access network you have had.

Because there are identical wholesale products for FTTP that match the FTTC speeds commonly sold, FTTP then adds some faster options.

Infinity 2 (now called Superfast Unlimited 2) tells you nothing about the technology used to deliver the service.

I'm on PlusNet FTTP.

You might like to read a few threads on the Fibre To The Premises trial section of their forum.

Only available to current customers so you'd need to transfer your existing service to them before moving house. And it's almost as cheap as chips.
