Re: NGA handover exchanges

In reply to a post by MrSaffron:
IT IS NOT TELLING YOU YOUR HANDOVER EXCHANGE

It is just a coincidence or the coming together of many factors that the IP is locating to that location.

Some coincidence that its telling me the address of the handover exchange thats 4 miles away and isnt showing me as being in the actual town that Im in.

Out of all the towns in my borough that it could have shown (and theres 5 different handover exchanges in my borough) it shows the correct town.

Well that came up with my town, which is a comparatively small town outside Glasgow.
So I'd say spot on smile

Maybe your CP has a POP there?

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Three 4G, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up.

I confess to being somewhat curious about this at one point.

Back when VDSL was being rolled out OR published a couple of progress spreadsheets. They had two columns, one gave the name of the town and the other gave the name of the exchange. I remember being intrigued at the time because Brackley had Banbury down as the exchange.

It sort of makes sense (Banbury exchange is a tower block whilst Brackley appears to be a converted garden shed) and running a fibre up the A422 seems sensible. But when I had ADSL I was told by the Be support staff that we were connected via Buckingham exchange back to Milton Keynes. In some ways that makes more sense given how important MK exchange is.

But as others have said - if it works it doesn't matter. And if it doesn't work it still doesn't matter 'cos there's nowt you can do about it anyway.

But Be ADSL2+ was nothing to do with actual fibre routeing for FTTC. Where your copper went, and probably still does, is irrelevant.

I wouldnt know. Im with BT.

Im not saying this would work with all CPs as it depends on their network layout.

Waste of time, "Uckfield East Sussex" thats a couple of hundred miles from me on the coastal end of South West Wales!

AIUI IP Address is allocated to your ISP, this surely has no relation to your physical location, and is more closely linked to the ISP POP

That is exactly right. NGA connections are tunnelled to the ISP POP, and it's the ISP which assigns the IP addresses.
