FTTP from different exchange than copper??

Hi all. I'm happy to say that I have just had FTTP installed, going from 3mb ADSL to 300mb. Its quite a revelation! Reason for post is because I was curious about the route the fibre has taken. My telephone exchange is Sutton Scotney which is about 3 miles from my house however when the OpenReach engineer came out he said that my FTTP connection is coming via the main Winchester exchange which is approx. 7 miles from my house.

Even now when I look on the various sites available (including this one), it tells me that FTTP is not available on the Sutton Scotney exchange (but is on Winchester) so I assume there is some truth to this because I now have it.

Whats odd is that Sutton Scotney does provide FTTC to the nearer properties so is fibre equipped (though not sure if the kit required would be any different for FTTP).

I'm just wondering if this is unusual for OpenReach to route fibre cable from a different exchange which is further away and doesn't already serve me with my copper.

Not unusual at all: most FTTP customers are served by an exchange other than the one that would deliver copper.

My FTTP line terminates at the main exchange in town (Inverness Macdhui) 3-4 miles away, whilst the copper goes to the nearest exchange, Inverness Culloden, less than 1 mile away. So not unusual at all

The fibres from the VDSL2 cabinets actually also head off to Winchester, which is a handover exchange serving a number of others for the GEA fibre based services in the area.

The checkers don't show this since they are also showing the copper results and VDSL2 being a mixture too.

I never expected it because there are just two houses where I live. We are last on the line with the nearest houses being over a mile away. OpenReach have cleared ducts, blown fibre and erected several new poles just to get it to us.

I figured all that work would have exceeded the typical 'cost per property' but I'm not complaining!

If the local authority gave them enough money all was well.

Yes much of the time this is the case. I�d like to see some figures on this-how many handover exchanges are there vs how many exchanges in total?

When the handover and local exchanges are different does the fibre still pass through the local exchange on route to the OLT in the handover exchange?

If its does its very unusual.
