Thanks for the analogy!

So if this is the case, what are my options? Can SSE do anything about this? Also, I wasn't experiencing this 2 months ago so I don't understand how it could be happening now unless SSE have taken a bunch of new customers on recently, which given the circumstances I doubt is true. Any ideas?

As I put in my reply to you.
SSE, could be the problem, with there 'backhaul' (the part of the internet that carries lots of internet data) being congested at peak times.

Don't forget during 'Lockdown' some parts of the internet has taken a hammering.

There is a very small thing called a virus that's about (Covid 19), Lots of people working from home, 'Zoom' calls from home, lots of people on the internet watching net flicks, playing games etc.
It all 'Hammers' the internet and the small and sometimes not very good ISP's let there customers down with a poor service.
Remedy leave SSE and go to a good ISP. !

They may have cut their costs by contracting for less backhaul capacity. If that is the case, your only real option is to move to another ISP which is a bit of a lottery as the new provider may also be running to the same low-cost scenario.

Or pay a bit more for one of the better providers.
