Are all three strands of fibre used for your connection or just one (and which colour)

You forgot the red one smile Only the blue one is used for service, the other three are kept as spares. I had fibre blown to the CSP which they don't (or very rarely) do these days.

Interesting that is, so in many ways having spare fibre is similar to the old copper lines (obviously copper is in pairs) which can be used for addressing problems or even broken lines.

Is fibre known to ever break or cause faults or is it quite sturdy, it either works 100% or not at all.

I see the wire strands in the piece I stripped down but did wonder about the strength of the actual fibre.

Yu forgot to say each individual fibre could be carrying 1Gb 10Gb, 40Gb or 100Gb and could also be carrying more than one of these by using multiple wavelengths.

I remember planning the installation of systems carrying 16 WDM 'channels' over two fibres over 10 years ago. (With 32 WDM systems available carrying 40Gb in each, so 1280Gb in 2 fibres) We only needed one (resilient) 10Gb connection between core routers back then!

Fibre is reasonably strong if the force is applied laterally, but fragile to sharp bends.

Pull a piece between or fingers, and it is sound, make a loop and pull, it breaks very easily.

If so is the feed from the splitter back to the next node a single fibre?

From the Openreach handover exchange to the splitter node (via an aggregation node) is a single fibre, the fibre is split up to 32 ways in the splitter and each of those fibres head off to the individual connectors on the connectorised block terminals which is where the cable from a property runs too.


I am sure others will explain it in more details if required.

Edit: Worth adding the fibre is joined/spliced many times from the exchange to the property as its not a single piece of fibre.

Thanks for the reply and info. The geek in me always likes to know this sort of stuff.

So at the splitter node where 1 fibre becomes up to 32 how is the split achieved?

Do they use different wavelengths for each fibre so they can overlay the signals?

Is the single fibre (the actual glass part that carries the signal) from the splitter back to the exchange the same size as the ones to each home?

I also appreciate it's not a single strand from exchange to home and there are lots of joints.

Over the years I've seen the geek headlines about the amount of data that Universities and Tech companies have managed to stuff down a piece of fibre and the mind boggles as to how it can work in much the same way as when you look at the number of stars in the sky and realise how many billions of galaxies are out there.

The single fibre is split in to 32.
It's a passive splitter, no processing done what so ever.

Each of those 32 fibres all contain the exact same data as the single fibre.
You have your data on your 1 fibre but you also have the data of the other 31 people running on your fibre.

Your ONT receives the exact same as everyone else's ONT but it is all encrypted.
Your ONT only has the key to decrypt your data.
