I too find this all very interesting,
Am I right in thinking that those individual fibres get joined together at the pole or in the manhole via a splitter?
If so is the feed from the splitter back to the next node a single fibre?
From the Openreach handover exchange to the splitter node (via an aggregation node) is a single fibre, the fibre is split up to 32 ways in the splitter and each of those fibres head off to the individual connectors on the connectorised block terminals which is where the cable from a property runs too.
I am sure others will explain it in more details if required.
Edit: Worth adding the fibre is joined/spliced many times from the exchange to the property as its not a single piece of fibre.
