So £11,882 + vat is only £158 above your budget, which surely has to be affordable? Especially if money has been saved on foreign holidays. Where does the gamble on £10k come in?

I'm confused by your reply, where have you got the £158 above my budget figure from? The quote is £4,258.40 above my budget, not £158.
The gamble came from older posts in previous threads about people getting desktop quotes of around £14,000 to £15,000 then the actual fixed quote coming in around £7,000 to £8,000, hence why having a maximum budget of £10,000 in total (i.e. including vat - so approx £8333.34 + vat).

Think it was this sentence that suggested your budget may be higher: Desktop survey in January 2019 was £14,100 + vat (hence my budget for this year) Although given that is ex VAT then it wouldn't have been an issue if that was the case.

Ahh, well spotted, that should have said "hence my £10k inc. vat budget for this year"
I need to proof read things before posting.
Sorry about not making that clear.

Just had an FTTPoD quote for a 6 premises linked order and in addition to the build it includes a BT connection charge of £495 per house and a Cerberus commissioning charge of £500 per house. Are these charges usual - I wasn't expecting them?

No idea sorry.

Not usual on a single premises order. Just the build charges.
Can’t tell you for certain about linked orders though.

The BT connection charge of £495 is standard - I've seen it in lots of previous posted FTTPoD quotes. I haven't seen the Cerberus commissioning charge before though.
