Yeah on the website you'll see a 'Change Server' button below the name of the server the system auto selected.

iOS apps have it too in a slide up from the bottom after running the first test.

I get this from one of my Linux boxes that is ethernet attached - this is a 2011 MacMini running Debian. As you can see the speed returned is pretty much as fast as you're going to get with the technology.

That test server is definitely capable and every time I run tests against it at any time of day, its full speed.

You might need to check what else going on your LAN at the time you're doing the tests. If nothing and you're still not getting max speed, something locally can't keep up.

@jimmybond007 I just tried the same Speedtest from a 2014 MacBook Pro running Big Sur and I see slower speeds to the same Ookla server. Its between 10-20% slower than running an Ookla Speedtest to the same speed test server via Linux.

Whilst it could be a browser issue (I only tried the test in Safari), I'm wondering if its a CPU horsepower issue as I noticed that when running the tests, the CPU was pegged!

Could be CPU bound, especially if running Ookla test from within a browser. That will eat just eat CPU cycles.

For [censored] and giggles, I dug out my old 2010 MBP last night whilst reading this thread. I haven’t used it in probably 2 years. The battery was completely dead, but it did duly take charge and fire up (not literally thank goodness). It managed a very respectable 937 down and 928 up on the built in GbE port running the Ookla MacOS app. For a near 11 year old box, it’s still got respectable horsepower - an i7 cpu and 8GB of RAM; cpu never went above 35%. In fact it was mostly around 14% besides a brief spike. For good measure it then decided it wanted to download an upgrade, all nearly 2.5 GB of which it pulled down from Apples servers in a little over a minute. So not too shabby really.

Interesting - I too tried the Ookla Speedtest App instead of the browser.

Works much better on the same machine.
