Options?

[link to this post]

Hi all,

Twenty years ago when my mum moved into her current house it was ideal for DSL - exchange only broadband line a short length of wire to the exchange, speeds were zippy and everything was rosy. Of course, EO is death for fibre.

2-3 years ago, Openreach installed a cabinet round the corner and switched her line to it. Looked like light at the end of the tunnel, but FTTC has not appeared and it looks like there are no plans to enable it.

Exchange is Cleveleys - LCCLV - and the new cab is 55. It seems to be the only one on the whole exchange with no plan to go fibre.

What are her options? She works from home and the DSL connection of around 8mbit just isn't strong enough. USO seems to be off the table as BT say the theoretical top end is 11mbit.

Codelook agrees.

According to the Thinkbroadband availability map, ITS Technology FTTP may be available in that area. Use the postcode checker for more info.

Otherwise you're looking at bonded ADSL, or 4G/5G.

According to Codelook all the postcodes on Cab 55 are within a few hundred metres of the exchange so speeds of over 20Mbps should be possible on ADSL2+ so what service is active? If it is 8Mbps download it sounds like the old ADSL_Max ADSL1 product with a maximum sync speed of 8.128 Mbps

Details of the router line stats would help.

Put your Mum's details in this, take a screenshot and post with her details removed at the top.

Thanks everyone - results:

On a good day (well outside working hours) I can get a speed test result for her of 18-19mbit, but business hours on Sky/Now broadband it's much less useable.

There's been no new property built in the area for at least 30 years. When cabinet 55 was first put in about three years ago it was showing as all the expected pre-fibre statuses, it got to (if I remember right) survey status and then dropped back to under review/no plans. So frustrating!

Hi,

It would be worth checking the stats on the router.
From what you've described that's either a slowdown in the ISP network or Interference that only happens in the day.

Thanks
Dan
