Re: UnchainedISP G.fast 221/30

I am already finding this tbh, the games are getting heavier and heavier.

I went with Sky because they were a fair bit cheaper than the competition and paid off my EE FTTC contract when I moved house.

The fact they don't offer anything faster than 150 is starting to frustrate me when TalkTalk are doing 500Mbps for £40 a month.

To be honest i don't get all this chasing speed and never have, i get 65Mbps and that is fine for us, i get some people need more speed if they are working from home and sharing internet with other family members but does the average internet user need more than 65Mbps?

Why would the average family need 150Mbps for?

I think these days its the massive files, either downloading game updates or 4K films. The average media file size as increased over the years, and it's probably going to keep going bigger as there isn't the same restraints on the media like there was back in the day i.e. with the cassette tape or the disk/disc sizes.

If there are multiple people in the house all using the same connection at the same time, then even on an averagely good FTTC connection it would start to struggle.

I find that when downloading Xbox games for the kids that half the time it struggles to exceed 100mb/sec. This didn’t appear to be a VM issue as everything else works full pelt all the time. The only reason I upgraded from 100mb to 350mb was for faster downloads of Xbox games, ended up being a pointless endeavour. Maybe at night the servers will be less busy, but then that defeats the point as if I’m asleep I don’t need them to download any quicker.

Oddly or not this thread has just been posted on similar lines...

The providers no doubt have deliberate bandwidth caps on their downloads, probably vary by time of day etc.

Good point actually, as I am usually updating the games as we've downloaded already nearly everything they like to play on with the xbox whatever subscription mebobbles. So yeah, that could make sense. I'll try a new game ater and see what the result is, however from past experience it didn't seem to make a difference whether it was a new game (to us - not the market) or update as it would rarely saturate the link.

Suggests it would be quicker to delete the game and re-download for some of these 100GB game "updates". 100GB update to a person like me who has no interest in gaming seems madness.

The only difference I can think of is that we don't have these hot of the press games, so all the things we are downloading are only the ones included in the xbox subscription.

If I wasn't a gamer and wanted straight out speed, i'd give Virgin a go again.

Apparently it has improved dramatically since Adslmax was last on it in the area we live in.

I do know at the time he was on it, it was absolutely garbage around here.

You can get 350Mbps for £34 a month now.

Those whom play these massive games on XBox or PlayStation find the faster speeds useful to update the monster large games (60GB downloads or more!!).

I would be quite happy with 60/65 Mbps, but with 15 or higher upload. Unfortunately FTTC /VDSL is often pretty awful at upload. Can't wait for FTTP with a real 80/20 service.

Have you enquired about FTTC and what speed you may get?

Lawks is he still at it, I remember him quibbling over 1 or 2Mbps on 8Mbps ADSL years ago. Somethings don't change. I'd have killed for those speeds g.fast or not our fastest prior to fttp next week was 7/8Mbps on fttc

Has Mr Max ever explained why he chases max speeds all the time or is it as i imagine just a need for speed.

I give it a week for the next posts about SRA cutting the speed by a fraction to 219MBit, engineers prob then get called out to waste their time before eventually at best he cancels the upgrade, incurring more costs on yet another innocent ISP.

Less than a week -

Why didn't I listen to u all to stay on 160/30!

I am going to cancel G.fast when I get back from Wales going back to PN VDSL 80/20. I have no sleep for a week. I do miss PN ISP. They are good to me! Oh dear what the matter with me???????
