There are several variants of the HG612, early ones did indeed overheat. The 3b variant was much better and is generally considered to be an excellent product.

I know. I still have two 3bs upstairs.

Certainly excellent for its time, but the components generally not up to the latest standards or capabilities. Andrue's is truly exceptional, and he has praised it fulsomely many times. Hence my somewhat flippant reply to him.

Plus they are all now fairly old, and electronics do degrade. If bought off eBay etc. may well be there for a reason ....

Most modern modems or modem routers leave the HG612 for dead in terms of connection speed.

Connections: OnePlus 8 Pro, 4G+ (LTE) max 165Mbps down, 24Mbps up on Three Mobile, and B311 4G+ router, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up.

HG612 has always worked perfectly for me mainly on fairly short lines, a few drops on a longer line but that is to be expected.

My present line is around 450 - 500 metres

It runs for weeks on end at 80/20 with no downstream errors with a 1.6db SNRM until there is an area power cut but still comes up before other modems and resyncs at 80/20 again.

I will continue to use it until FTTP arrives or it fails.smile

There is that but my cab is about 300 metres away and I think I do just fine:

My Broadband Speed Test

So yes, maybe I could get another 6 or 7Mb/s down with a modern modem but I rarely need all that I currently have anyway.

Long live my HG612 tongue

In reply to a post by witchunt:
ECI cabinets are especially prone to overheating problems , contamination of the cards and line card failures.

They are indeed prone to overheating in the summer.

The crazy thing is OpenReach also had to retro fit heating pads to all the ECI DSLAM's as they let in too much moisture/condensation when cold, corroding the electronics.

They don't like it hot or cold.

…not before they “sweat the asset” at least physically if not financially! 😎
