Green Port ONT

[link to this post]

I think the openreach full fibre ONT the box with Green Port is fibre optic mean my brother can't touch it? Am I right? Only the next ethernet port he can use it. For his full fibre 1000/115 with BT

The green port is the SC/APC port for the optical connection. There’s no need to touch or fiddle with it. The only user accessible port on an ONT is the copper RJ45 Ethernet port.

Tell him also, that you can easily screw up an FTTP connection like that by allowing dust and dirt in on the faces of the connectors …. So don’t [censored] about with it.

Yep and H&S avoid looking into the end of the fibre connector. There’s no visible light to see with active FTTP connection… but an outside risk of corneal or retinal eye damage.

I was very surprised the openreach engineer didn't explain to him when he got FTTP first installed and how to take care of ONT.

That's because there is nothing really to 'take care of'. It's just a box on the wall, that you leave powered on and only connect to the ethernet port as said. If the PON light goes out and the LOS light is red then you have problem and the only thing you can do is just call your provider to get it resolved. That's it.

Thanks - will tell my brother when I see him this weekend but so far he seem happy with his FTTP 900/115 on speedtest as his son playing gaming online most of the time. They have ditched virgin media for good.

If FTTP come along I would go for FTTP 330/50. That's more than enough for my need.

I remember you telling me this when trying to setup that field building fibre connection, totally didn't look down the fibre to see why it wasn't working.... (But the dust was the reason!)

They sure don’t like dust and other contaminants like fingerprints and oil on the faces (especially single mode ones as you know) 👍
