Internal CSP location

[link to this post]

While talking FTTP to a friendly Openreach engineer yesterday who fixed my copper line brought down by last weekend's wind, he happened to mention that in some cases an internal CSP can be fitted if required.

My copper line currently enters the loft about 7m above the ground so when I order FTTP the fibre would presumably take the same route. I would really prefer the ONT to be installed in a landing cupboard where I already have my networking gear, the internal distance to this cupboard from the cable entry point is approximately 8-9m.

The loft is low with no boarding or lighting but I am MORE than happy to pre-install suitable conduit and a pull string all the way from the entry point to the landing cupboard and be on hand on the day to help feed cables up there, as I know engineers aren't permitted to enter unboarded or unlit attics.

Are Openreach likely to be happy with this arrangement so that an internal CSP and the ONT can both be installed in the cupboard, or do they insist that the CSP be located as close as possible to the entry point into the house?

Previous threads here have seemed to indicate that it might be more likely they would run the fibre drop cable down to a standard external CSP near ground level before running the CSP->ONT cable back up the same way to enter the house. However it feels to me that this would involve MORE work than my preferred approach above, and the engineer yesterday agreed. Note that he is fibre trained and has done a number of installations so knows what he is talking about.

What are the thoughts of people here, was my engineer broadly correct or would it most likely end up depending on how the engineer on the day was feeling as to what method was used?

i dont have a csp outside. the fibre comes down the pole then through ducting under the lawn that i installed, up the wall into the loft again in conduit i put there, runs across the loft and drops down through the stud walls to the ont in an internal cupboard. the or guys couldnt have been more helpful. one even fitted the fibre through the lawn ducting before 9 am on new years day!!. so if you have ducts/conduit and draw rope in place they probably wiil do it as it makes their job easier, and who wouldnt like that.

It will often depend on who does teh work ! I had one of the sub-cons and they were happy to run fibre through soffit, then into 20mm conduit ( crawled across and did that) then pulled through 6 or 7m of conduit through that loft, through a 300mm wall and further conduit in a second loft where the CSP and ONT were installed. As he said, easier to do that than drop down from te eaves to ground level, then back up and into the house.

If you are prepared to do teh risky work - unlit, unboarded loft and fit 20mm conduit using swept bends rather than elbows, you will normally find them co-operative.

The external CSP gives a good access point for testing purposes.
The cable for the ONT is run from inside back out.

If you provide a suitable conduit with a decent drawer cord in it, it *might* be used.

So my R100 survey ended up with agreement that they would run an underground cable for 400m and then run it up a single pole at the edge of the property before running over 20m to the eaves just under the guttering, then going into the building through an existing removable foam filled 6" clay pipe set into a 2ft thick stone wall (for ventilation for the cows in the buildings earlier life). The ONT will be on an internal wall at eye height close to the clay pipe exit where there is a double plug point and a network cable that runs to the main router. So in that case would the CSP be on top of the pole, on the wall outside next to the clay pipe (2.5M high but no ones needs to be in for access) or inside near the ONT which would need someone to be in to provide access.

Put the conduit and draw rope in as suggested by others and keep your fingers crossed you get a decent engineer.

We can speculate but it all comes down to the engineer on the day.

Thanks for all the replies, I'll install 20mm PVC conduit from the entry point to the cupboard (using inspection bends rather than elbows) with a strong pull string inside and cross my fingers that I get a helpful and cooperative engineer on the day. Will ensure that the biscuit cupboard is well-stocked beforehand smile
