Ubiquity experts

[link to this post]

Currently have a DrayTek 2927 and DrayTek AP902 and am getting fed up with the [censored] wifi on them. I have a case open that DrayTek don't seem to be able to resolve am i'm fast giving up.

I've started looking at Ubiquiti stuff and am a little lost having used DrayTek for quite a few years. Can anyone recommend me a setup, it seems like there's so many variants of the same products?

I need a gigabit capable router (zen 900Mbps) with wifi and then 1 additional wifi access point for upstairs. I've also got an 8 ip static block. It's for home office use.

Am I correct in thinking that the Dream Machine (UDM) or (UDR) would work and do everything What access point do I need? Is that everything that is needed? Is the UDR overkill?

Where can you buy this stuff, everywhere seems out of stock? Currently got this:

Do these have to be run off PoE? Or is there an adapter?

Look at a Dream Machine Pro - guessing you have FTTP, you can then connect that straight to the ONT.

UDM Pro acts as interface, router and switch. Check on teh Ubiquiti support forum for use of 8 static IPs

Then choose a couple of access points - I use the Flex HD. They come with PoE injectors and I have a large house which the cover adequately.

I have a supplier who has stock of the UDM Pro and various APs.

Is the Ubiquity branded gear any easier to use than their Edgerouters? Cos I have a couple of Edgerouters and I wish I hadn't...

You're on Zen, what's wrong with the FritzBox 7530 they supply? There'a also a repeater.

FritzBox stuff is easy enough to use - no command line required! It works well and it works with Zen.

LinITX based up the road from me in Suffolk have some stock of various UniFi access points and Dream Machine routers.

Stock is very constrained everywhere in general, so you may need to shop around - depending on exactly what you want.

I like UniFi access points and have used them for years, but prefer to use others for routing duties.

If you're happy with the routing performance of the DrayTek, then keep it. Turn off the wifi, and plug one or more separate wifi access points into its LAN ports.

I am very happy with the Unifi AC Lite. Like Pheasant, I prefer to keep the routing and the wifi separate anyway.

I'm currently looking for a second router for work, I have a USG pro which has been fine for 5+ years but the reports I have seen on the Dream machine pro are not great and I don't really trust Ubiquiti any more after the debacles of the past so once configured, shut the controller down.
The Unifi wifi gear works really well though for me.

For home I'm using a Topton J4125 based mini PC for OPNSense and will likely find a suitable box such as a Pondesk rank mountable device for OPNSense/pfSesnse also.
