G.Fast Socket

I am about to move into my first house (which I have purchased) and have ordered a G.Fast service from TalkTalk.

My question is, the Openreach engineer will be arriving on Monday next week to update the socket and install the modem. The current location of the existing socket (to my knowledge) is in the Front/Living room which for me isn't ideal. I don't fancy paying TT to ask OR to move it, and being that the OR engineer is there for an install I am not sure he'd be in a position to move it either.

Can I, at some point, create an extension (like you can with FTTC) from the rear of the Faceplate and route this to a new location, or does that not work with G.Fast?

I have never used G.Fast before so I thought it best to ask here.

Funny u asked this because last year I did asked the engineer if they can do extension from hallway to upstair my pc room. He was honest say no, it will make things worse on G.fast but was ok on FTTC.

I think what you are asking is about specific ’data only’ extension ?

I’m not aware of them of them if they do exist. I haven’t examined the inside of my G.Fast socket , but will take a look later.

Keep it as simple as possible. These lines are fussy, so even another 10m might make a world of difference.

Could you not run an ethernet cable from the NTE to where you want the router ?

No harm in asking the installer though.

From your other posts I see you are expecting to get a separate Openreach G.Fast modem so the best solution is to have the modem at your existing master socket location and run an ethernet cable to where you want the router. This has the benefit of being able to put the router in a better area for Wi-Fi coverage.

As others have said it is not a good plan to increase the line length with an extension, but as you expect full G.Fast speeds you might find it works for you. Problem is you don't know unless you actually try it.

Even if both the modem and router ended up in the living room, you could still run ethernet elsewhere:

* to a switch, if what you need is wired ethernet ports in a different room
* to an additional access point, if what you need is better wireless coverage in the house
* or a combination of those

It just looks like an awkward position to have the setup located in. However the CAT cable idea may work.

I guess I will have to see how it goes once I am moved in.

Hi Zarjaz no worries thanks for letting me know.

I did have an idea, if I could mount the OR Modem to the wall (on it's side) and then run a CAT6 cable from it to a router, that could work.

That will be fine. But just FYI, CAT5e is all you need here. It works at 1G over up to 100m.

CAT6 is thicker, less flexible and harder to terminate. Over 100m it's still only 1G, but it can do 10G over shorter distances.

CAT6A is even thicker and harder to work with, but can do 10G over 100m.

Don't buy anything that claims to be CAT7 or CAT8. CAT7 isn't TIA/EIA recognized and requires non-standard connectors. Anything you come across that claims to be CAT8 at a reasonable price is probably fake.

The garbage I see on AmaFleaBay doesn't even remotely resemble 'proper' Cat 7 cable anyway - which is more like the old IBM Type 1 of yore...individual foil wrapped pairs in an overall foil/braided sheath. Over-engineered German madness.
