What's a 'track'

[link to this post]

I've seen references to a 'track' in FTTP discussions and now a roadworks site talks of "Installing 14m of track to link to BT Network". That's a network using PIA and avoiding a blockage, but in any case, what's a 'track'?

It refers to the main arterial fibre cable, in Openreach systems typically from to/from the handover exchange to the aggregation node or indeed from aggregation node to splitter node. For AltNets it’s similar but from their key PoP nodes to their points of distribution. Also known as spine cable.

If you think about it in terms of cabling architecture, in a trunk and branch architecture it’s the “trunk”.

Thanks. Initially I was thinking it could be the mini ducting installed within the Openreach duct. In this case FWIW its Virgin.

No Sir, track is another name for a trench. The description indicates that 14m of trench is going to be dug to install underground plant and reinstated. Could be between anything, just a term that some civils guys use.

Incorrect. It means underground ducting, it may eventually contain a trunk or more commonly known spine cable, or general PON cabling, or even copper cabling.

When a day isn't a school day it's a wasted day smile
