Re: Parents Consider move from FTTC to FTTP

[re: mortmaru] [link to this post]

If there is a CityFibre cabinet nearby and no sign of digging/a toby for each house then CityFibre will be using the Opeanreach ducts to get to each house.

CityFibre pay Openreach under the PIA/DPA process to use space in their ducts, there is no limit of one service per duct/house, the current copper cable used for Plusnet should not be touched as part of the install.

From your image CityFibre would have their cable coming out of the duct next to the current Openreach cable supplying Plusnet and then they would put their external box on the wall some where convenient.

Where I live we can get Openreach FTTP or Virgin Media RFoG these are both supplied down the same Openreach duct as the phones/copper cable were originally installed in, CityFibre may also use the same duct when they reach me. Each provider simply puts their cable into the duct, at least one neighbour here has Openreach copper (probably dead), Openreach FTTP and Virgin Media to their front door via the Openreach duct.

In terms of exclusivity Northampton was one of the original CityFibre locations which Vodafone have exclusivity in, it is normally around 12months from when an area goes live, but not sure on the exact details.

In reply to a post by simon194:
Regarding the blocking feature of those phones; as long as the caller id works with the new provider then the blocking will work without any problems.

Indeed that is the question. "Caller ID" involves some special analogue signalling that goes down the line - and it's unclear whether the ATA in Vodafone's router will implement that function.

https://support.vodafone.co.uk/Broadband/Pro-Broadba...
does mention some things that digital voice can't do, but doesn't mention caller ID one way or the other.

https://www.vodafone.co.uk/broadband/homephone
"Caller Display" *doesn't* have the asterisk meaning "Not available on full fibre".

So the implication is that it *should* work, but I wouldn't want to set the OP's expectations too high.

CallerID will most definitely work on a native SIP phone - anything which connects directly to ethernet or wifi and talks SIP.

Also, see this thread regarding how a change of the format of the number presented via Caller ID may break things...

IDNET SOGEA FTTC | AAISP VOIP | Ubiquiti UDM Pro | 2x Unifi AC-Lite & 1x AC-LR Wifi AP
