Worry about being left out!

[link to this post]

Hi. Keeping things brief, a gigabit altnet (Lightspeed Broadband) is building in my area and my address shows as included in the build plan. The pole outside my house had an aluminium bracket added months ago by them. A few weeks ago they came and put black boxes on every other pole in the area but mine. How much of a bad sign is that? I might be worrying too early but in my mind I'm thinking they couldn't hook up my pole to the previous one via underground cable and because I'm at the end of my street, and the pole only serves the final 8 houses, they left it.

They did some work on some of the other poles (new patch of tarmac laid) and have roadworks to remove duct blockages planned on some surrounding streets, but nothing planned for my road. When they go live and if it lets me order do you think they will come back and finish the job or just say sorry, no, not worth it? I've walked the dog all around and looked at every pole and it really does seem mine is the only one that's been left behind.

perhaps your house and the other 7 round it might be intended to be served from the next pole instead

If you are worried then drop them an email. The altnets are generally much easier to talk to than Openreach, Virgin Media etc.

A similar situation here. Lightspeed added a bracket to out pole back in Spring but nothing else since. I've noticed that a lot of the brackets on other pole around town also have nothing on them. Lightspeed still have works showing on one.network around town so their still up to something. On top of that, UPP Broadband have also added a box to our pole (again, back in June) and the fibre cable is already connected to it from the ground. Whatever happens I'm surely going to get fibre options eventually

I genuinely don't get why both would build in the same area. Openreach + Virgin Media + CityFibre + another I get but two genuine altnets in the same place mystifies me.

Maybe it mystifies Lightspeed too so they aren't deploying?

Why *wouldn't* they both build there? This place is attractive for some reason - e.g. it's cheap to construct, and/or has demographic factors that make take-up more likely. That's especially true if there's no Openreach FTTP or Virgin: when the only other choice is [self-censored] copper, people are more likely to take *any* alternative.

But if that's the case for altnet A, then it's also the case for altnet B.

Yep.

We have Trooli, and now Giganet are following with their network, and making progress!

Its a bit like saying, why do supermarkets stock different brands of the same product.

There's no other pole in range on my road. I'm a corner house on the junction so it's possible I could get quite a long cable from a pole on the next street, but most of my neighbours couldn't because houses/roofs block where the cable would have to go to reach them from any other pole than the one they've not upgraded! So while this can't be their plan, I do - fingers crossed - have a possible alternative myself!

Lightspeed will clear up here because we have no fast alternatives whatsoever! They've said they are coming soon for about 18 months, but recently there's been a lot of contractor activity and they enabled the town near us. I spoke to an engineer who was working and he said he estimates mid-Jan which will be a couple of months after I received their "Not long now until we're coming to your area" letter in the post. Just worried I'll lose out somehow because fast internet seems too good to be true, I've never been lucky enough to have it!

Connections can go via intermediate poles. That is, when you place an order, they may run a drop cable from pole A (where the fibre box is) via pole B (which is outside your house) to your house.

I'm not saying that *will* happen like that in your case, but there are certainly cases where it does (including with Openreach's own FTTP network).
