And we will all be relieved when he does tongue

The benefit of him having a 2 year contract is we don't have to go through all this every year 🤣

12 months is 1 year, I said I will not go for a 24 month contract and I still stick with that

That looks like a very good deal. Also it would allow you to potentially keep the PN FTTC service until the end of June and hopefully the zzooomm FTTP broadband would be up and running within a few weeks from when an order was placed.

Good luck smile

It is a good deal, if i went for it I would have it installed around the middle of next month, so I would still have a couple of weeks with plusnet, just in case it all goes belly up

If you do go for a FTTP installation its probably a good idea to ensure that that the copper connection remains "live" if you want to keep it for a while. I emphasized that requirement to my installer, he did not disturb the copper connection, i.e. the drop wire, the BT66 external junction box and the internal NTE5, and it remained active during and post the installation.

ZZoomm will not be able to touch the copper connection, as they are not anything to do with openreach. But I am going to get rid of the extension behind the TV no matter what I do, it was only for sky many years ago when they required their boxes to be connected to the phone line.

i am going to pop out in a bit to get some trunking to put the cables in as they look a right mess under the shelf. that is for the router, modem, Alexa, a couple of hubs

As title, I got a letter from Zzoomm yesterday, just my address, but different from the normal stuff they send as this was in an envelope I presume because I went through the motions of ordering until I got to pick the day for installation.

anyway, they have offered a 500Mb/s for £24.95 for 12 months, which is pretty good I must admit, telephone offer only, also 1Gb/s for £29.95. Got until the end of this month to order if I want it.

May I ask a few questions please?
1) If you so desired, can you order an FTTP service at your address
2) Assuming you ordered FTTP, would you bring your landline over into digital voice
3) Are you currently a SKY subscriber
4) With FTTP installed, would you opt to receive all your TV channels over the internet
5) Would you opt for Broadband and Digital Voice with the same or different providers
6) With FTTP, what speeds would you select
7) What typically do you use the internet for
8) Your reasons for not using the Microsoft operating system
9) The number of pieces of equipment that are connected to your network
10) What sources of information do you use relating to computing in general

To put this into context, Adrian is a serial poster on TB telling us all so much of his installation setup and choices he makes with hardware and which ISP he may or may not subscribe to. Some of what he says, I would like to respond to but then realise I don't have the full picture to advise or comment upon what he says. I asked nothing that should rightfully be kept out of the public domain. I wouldn't ask the same questions (aka survey in your book) of anyone else.

So does that mean that they never use hybrid drop cables (i.e. copper + fibre optic) from poles to premises?

I doubt any of the alt-net’s would provision copper. Why would they? If an alt-net wanted to provide voice, it would be a VoIP service through either the router or an additional box.

I’m not Adrian but I’ll give you some answers for my part of the UK.

1 - Not yet, waiting for an alt net, but have Virgin cable.
2 - Not offered by the alt net, and no sign of Openreach in town, VM landlines are all “digital voice” from a few years ago, and I didn’t buy.
3 - no, used to be
4 - that’s a different product, SkyQ or older SkyHD still need dish. If you want TV over the broadband with Sky then you’re looking at Sky Stream (or the TV thing) with no recording, so vastly different.
5 - Its not often a choice, it depends what is offered. “Digital Voice” is probably a BT Service Mark from the Retail division. Others use different terms.
6 - The altnet building in my town has one speed for one price.
7 - A very invasive question - Everything
8 - A very invasive question - Felt like it
9 - A very invasive question - Lots
10 - A very invasive question - BYTE magazine in the 1980s, back issues via google. Invaluable.
