Access Terminal Box

[link to this post]

I have recently moved into a new residential development for old people such as me. We have a community clubhouse. Being curious by nature or just nosy, I have been trying to understand what we have in the clubhouse as the builders just look blank when I ask. All the houses have fibre connected to each home which is great. The clubhouse just has an Openreach branded Hauwei Access Terminal Box ATB2111. The power and PON lights are on and an ethernet cable has been left dangling from it. Nobody seems to know why it is there or what it is for. As far as I can see nothing uses the connection.
Can anyone please explain what this box is for and why it might have been provided? My guess is that it can be used to link to more than one ONT if required. The clubhouse also has guest accommodation above. The address does not appear on the Openreach checker.

The box is an ONT, Optical Network Terminator explained here. Nornally you would connect a router with a Wan ethernet port to it.

Thanks but this is different to the normal ONT that I have in my house. If the links below work, they should show images.

Looks like a standard Nokia ONT if I'm reading this BT page correctly. Just has a bit of a "flash" housing compared to the others.

The housing may well be to stop accidenttal disconnection and has a fastening screw to stop fiddling with it albeit no lock.

The Huawei ATB2111 is the box containing the ONT, which probably isn't a Huawei model, not sure if Openreach are installing them. Anyway it's an openreach FTTP connection. How you will get hold of the login credentials is your next problem.smile

You would assume someone was responsible for getting the service installed and is paying an ISP for it so presumably at some point they will stick something on the end of it (maybe provide a wifi service to the users of the clubhouse).

Thanks for all your replies. I guess when wiring up all the houses that Openreach installed this ready in case a live connection was required. Currently no ISP has been contracted so the residents will need to decide of they want to add the cost to the clubhouse running costs which we all share. Now I know there is an ONT inside the box, getting online access should be straightforward. It's just a small self managed development of 40 properties and not one of these large retirement complexes with their own on site management.

So, for my take on what you say, the whole new build estate has full fibre, from Openreach. An ONT will be provided to each property, and, it would seem, the clubhouse too.
When these ONT’s were fitted the serial number for the ONT at each address was noted, so all a customer wishing service has to do is order from a service provider who supply over the Openreach fibre network.
Each ONT is already lit, and the serial number registered, hence the solid PON light.

A service need’s ordering, paying for, and then a router with that CP’s login details connecting the the ONT via the ethernet cable.

There is small chance that if you took your router from your service down and plugged it in, it *might* work, if they are both built to the same SASA … but do you really want every Tom, Dick, and Harry using your connection ? I suspect not.

Who ever is to manage and run the clubhouse needs to order a service.

Many thanks for all the helpful replies. We are having a communal "get together" next week so we can decide if we want to pay for broadband in the clubhouse. As you mention, we all have fibre to each house and we are trying to keep costs down so we might give it a miss.
