Wild speed results

[link to this post]

HI,

Every since getting FTTP my speed tests have varied wildly, most sites on OOKLA don't test higher than 20MB DL, though UP is always between 68 to 72.

The servers to the ISP do occasionally test at the line speed but all others never beyond 20MB for DL.

I know not a lot to go on but why would it be like this, I expect lower speed but not a loss of 480.

How are you testing? Wired or wireless?
When you say 20MB do you mean 20Mb? (There's a huge difference).

Is this a 550/75 Openreach connection?

Don't you have an open fault on this service?

Not anymore, they've tested and saying all fine. I did mention that fault the OR engineer found but not interested and also saying they don't have any equipment, all OR equipment. They've offered a WiFi booster!

I am testing using a USB gigabit dongle direct to the router with nothing else plugged into the LAN ports and WiFi switched off.

The peculiar thing is VF servers on Ookla normal test OK, though they also poor speed. Rest other than the odd occasion have always tested 20MB or below.

Product is FTTP sold as 500/70.

Thanks

I would go through the complaints process with a view to exiting the contract if they are unable to prove that the service is performing

They have escalated let's see what pans out.

It is bloody annoying as speeds are see saw, I've had 485 and easier today after router rebooted 3.14, which is a new law☹️☹️

That really doesn't resolve issues that your line has had!

Gigabit USB dongle? OK, but what type of USB port is it plugged into? Call me old fashioned, but I don't trust USB for getting the best from networking.

It's a USB C, on my ADSL it was always spot on, FTTP, it's gone to 488 once mostly sub 25MB.
Will do the TBB, in past it's been one of the lowest speeds.
