ONT Power Consumption

[link to this post]

Does anyone have any real figures (measurements) for the power consumption of ONTs?

I assume that if these are XGS-PON versions then there is a significant increase in the power required.

I remember some years ago seeing a 10Gb/s ethernet card fitted to a server and was surprised to see a large heatsink attached to it.

The ONT I have (Adtran 611) has a max consumption of 6 watts.

Must have been many years ago, they have small heatsinksbut nothing like a home user graphics card or server computation card. (e.g. NVIDIA H100).

Measured using a cheapo Amazon plug-in power meter:

Nokia XGS-PON: 4.9w with active PON/1G Ethernet connected (5.4w with 2.5G Eth)
Adtran GPON: 2.7w with active PON/1G Ethernet

Values didn't change under load.

Edit: Virgin hub 5 when I had it was around 11.5w idle. I can't remember if that was in modem mode or router mode but from what I remember it didn't make much difference.

My ONT that CityFibre installed, has used 1.87 kWh over the last 30 days, according to the TPlink smart plug it's plugged into.

That's a bit over two and a half watts, but you have to bear in mind that those wallplug PSU's can make a nonsense of AC power meters (wildly non-sinusoidal current waveform).

Best to rely on measurements on the DC side.

Compared to 1Gbps network cards and slower which historically have not needed a heatsink the heatsinks that 10Gbps cards require are in fact large. The heatsinks fitted to modern GPUs are just enormous smile

Even if you are looking at 7 watts, which most of the time they are less than that, you are looking at 11 kWh there about over a month, so i with my electric at 22.32p a unit, you are looking at around £2.45 a month to run them

better to do a year then divide it by 12 so you get an averaged monthly figure..

Anways at 6watts you are looking at £11.72 per year based on july's energy cap.
