FTTP - CSP to ONT external cable

[link to this post]

To quote Carol Anne - "They're here".

"They" are OR. I've spoken to guys in the next street that have a large roll of fibre.

My preferred install option would be to route the fibre drop wire from the front right hand side of our bay window, through a shared covered terraced alley way to the back where the CSP could be installed (around 10m of extra fibre length) at ground level before the connection cable is run up the outside wall to the rear bedroom/study where the ONT could be installed next to the computer / current router. However, we have a front bay window and the drop wire may catch or be too close.

The fallback will be to run the fibre to the left hand side of the bay window (closer to the pole and avoids the wire crossing the bay window) and drop the wire to ground level for the CSP connection (next to the external smart gas meter enclosed in a white box) and then run a cable back up into and across the boarded / lit loft and down some ducting into the rear bedroom / study. The existing copper follows the loft/ducting path.

To help the OR person and overcome any hesitation to using the loft if the fallback option is necessary, I'm thinking of purchasing external fibre cable (approx 20m) that would allow me to pre-wire from the rear bedroom/study to the eaves at the front of the house.

Is this a good idea? I've seen some suppliers recommended - fs dot com, elfcam. Any others? If I purchase a cable with both ends terminated with SC/APC connectors, I assume the OR person will snip one off for the connection at the CSP.

Thank you

This should be fine - others can confirm. If its going thru any conduit please put a draw string inside so that the fibre can be pulled up thru the tube. Note that the or installer may temporary install an eyebolt to secure their ladder

Don't buy sc/apc fibre prior to the install. if its in a loft, and its fully boarded then thats fine for OR bods, otherwise put some internal conduit in and a draw string to drag the fibre thru.

Its extremely unlikely the installer will use fibre cable you provide and install. I have seen scenarios where customer provided fibre cable has been used but I am not willing to say how and why as I don't want people on here to get the wrong idea.

Most installs I've seen if coming in overhead are run immediately down the wall to ground level where a CSP is installed, then the inside-outside cable is run from the ONT location back to the CSP. Some people provide conduit and a draw string to make life easier but thats where I would suggest you draw a line

Would it be better for the OP to run ethernet and let OR put the ONT at the front of the property. It could even be fibre to an SFP+ port or similar.

In this scenario: don’t purchase any external fibre. Just don’t do it.

Better to explain to the OR engineer on the day, to route it the way you would like it externally. As said, if you really think the internal fallback route will be necessary then you can help them by installing conduit with draws that they can use to install their supplied fibre.

Good luck with the install. I'm sure it will be fine.
