Asbestos report

I'm involved with a new fibre installation at a business premises.
It's scheduled in a couple of weeks.
The Openreach surveyor was out the other day and has requested an asbestos survey.

Is this routine? Or frequent?
I believe there was a report done in 2014. Would that still be valid?

If I was preparing a report for a business then I would be protecting myself and the business by requesting an asbestos report. If the building passes (i.e. no asbestos) then I would be clear to proceed without fear for my health. If the building fails then they would need to get the asbestos removed before I would proceed. I would also be protecting the business as they might not be aware that they might have been working in a dangerous environment.

I believe it would still be valid as long as no alterations have been made since the report was created (that doesn't mean Openreach will accept it considering it was done 12 years ago), I believe anything found would have to be monitored every 12 months.

In my opinion the business is better off getting a new report to protect everyone.

It's not like a passport, validity doesn't really come into it; it's whether OR will accept it or not and the only way to find that out is to ask them.

My guess is that they'll err on the side of caution and want a new one.

Bakelite is/was a fibre reinforced resin, but it was common for that fibre to be Asbestos...
safe until broken, or machined.

So there I was waiting for the member of staff in a well known museum to finish his tests on radiation from the cockpit instruments before I could finish assembly, I didn't bother to point out the fuselage was stuffed full of asbestos.

Hehe.
My own story is about playing in piles of the stuff dumped in the field next to our houses. That was **WELL** over half a century ago though.

In all my years of working with this technology, this is the first time I've run up against needing to get an asbestos report.
Thinking about that, I realise that many of the installations have been FTTC, so the infrastructure is already there.
As someone said, maybe residential installations don't get this question, just business ones.

Nothing ever goes straightforward.

Is the report referenced in a regularly reviewed risk assessment, which would identify the need for a further survey if changes were made that might expose asbestos?
If so then a further survey should not be required.
