1,000 Mbps or 1,600 Mbps ?

OpenReach have nearly completed the FTTP install for our small group of six houses.

The "Congratulations, you can now get Full Fibre on the Openreach" email said up to 1.6 Gbps was available.

Zen offered 1.6 Gbps as an option when I placed the order and accepted the order.

But when I use www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com it shows "WBC FTTP Up to 1000" and "KCI2 Assure".

Is this some sort of lag in the database being updated (I know it has been updated as before it didn't have FTTP showing apart from FTTPoD) ? Or is this actually going to be a problem ?

I've only ever seen the checker say "WBC FTTP Up to 1000" even when 1.6Gbps is available.

BTwholesale checker isn't the same as Openreach product.... it may be also that Wholesale haven't updated their checker.

That's because BT Wholesale only offer up to 1gig - the 1.6 product is only availble to ISPs difectly from Openreach. So the BT Wholesale checker will only ever show 1000

If Zen are offering 1600 at your address, it means they have their own backhaul from your Openreach Handover Point.

Zen uses BT Wholesale at the OHPs where there is no Zen backhaul. As jguk1 has said, BT Wholesale does not currently support anything faster than 1000. We are on one of the "no Zen backhaul" OHPs, and the fastest we can have is 1000/110.

Unfortunately none of the checkers is ideal, in that there’s isn’t one that presents all the possible useful information.

So you’ve just come up against one of the key limitations of the BTW checker - it won’t report anything beyond 1000/220 Mbps - as that’s all that BTW will provide to their wholesale customers. The other information in that checker is quite useful (the now soon to be irrelevant for many people VDSL line stats), the type of property and feed type OH or UG and probable connection scenario if not already connected, FTTP priority exchange detail, yada, yada…

The official Openreach checker, although usually correct in the headline FTTP speeds it reports is utterly useless from any other perspective. It’s totally dumbed down.

So there you have it. You need to stitch together info from several sources to actually get the most detailed and hopefully correct information. That’s before we contemplate database update delays and outright inaccurate records of course 😅

Yup this is all indeterminate crystal ball gazing for now...just like when XGS will be widely available (although at least there are some vague public dates / coverage numbers for that recently).
